Group Posts on Front Page--Private groups

Hi all-

Private group postings should no longer be showing up on the front page.

I've also seen a few posts from folks who dislike having their public group posts show up on the home page.  Frankly I'm not entirely sure why anyone would be against that, other than being against change because it's "different."

My thought is that:

1. If you post something in a public group, anyone can read it anyway.  Presumably, you post things here because you want people to hear what you have to say.  The fact that the post now shows up on the front page gives you a larger audience.  If you REALLY want to have a private discussion, you can have it over site mail (or in a private group).

2.  There have been several concerns about not knowing what's going on in other groups or not even knowing certain groups exist.   The fact that you can now easily see activity in groups where you may not be a current member may cause you to want to join that group.  This is good for the group and good for the member, and good for the Seniorocity community.   Personally, I've seen a ton of interesting activity in groups that I previously knew nothing about.

Anyway, feel free to drop by the Advisory Group if you want to discuss this feature further...

Rob:  I agree with you.  I like seeing the latest posts on the front page.  Some have peaked my interest to check out that group.  It also made me aware that there is more activity on this site than I had thought.

Good idea!

Imagine you are in a group of all women with breast cancer, or people who have lost a spouse, or singles.  Would you necessarily want your public posts within that group out where everyone could see them?  Even if you have posted nothing secret or shameful, you might normally assume you were speaking to your peers within that group rather than the general population.  I think some people are genuinely concerned that something that is said "amongst friends" would suddenly appear for everyone to see.
Just because anything posted in a public group CAN be read by anyone does not mean it NEED be read by anyone or that the poster would WANT it read by anyone.
How is it decided which posts appear on the home page?  Who decides?  And why?
Is there not a better way to promote groups and increase activity on the site?  Could we not have some sort of counter for how many posts and individuals posters are in each group?  Or a daily counter of posts to a group?  Could we have a search feature of not only how many members are in a group but how many postings.
If people want to know what is going on in public groups, why don't they simply go look?  They ARE public after all.  There are not that many groups that someone wanting to know what groups exists can not find them.

Thanks so much Rob - I agree with you completely about the public groups and am grateful to you for closing the private groups to front page.
